Solid hardwood floors

Solid hardwood floors are beautiful, warm underfoot, easy to care for and always in style. They add classic elegance to any room and are a great investment for increasing your home’s value. At Emco, we offer hardwood flooring made out of oak, maple, pecan, walnut, hickory, beech, cherry and exotic imports.

Nowadays, the majority of hardwood flooring comes prefinished from the factory which makes it easier to install and gives a more uniform look. However, despite the advantages and waterproofing qualities of high-tech urethane finishes, you still need to be wary about installing wooden floors in bathrooms, kitchens, basements or any other place where moisture may be a problem.

Wood flooring is available in several styles and finishes:

Wooden strips

This is the traditional looking, tongue and groove wooden flooring that, once installed, has the effect of making the room look bigger than it is. Strip flooring usually measures from 1 1/2" - 3" wide and 5/16" - 3/4" thick.

Planks

Plank flooring usually measures from 3"- 8" wide and adds a touch of antiquity to any room.

The hand-scraped look

This is a very sought after finish that imitates years of wear and tear, is full of character and charm, and in its inherent imperfections is easy to live with and care for. But don’t be fooled by the aged appearance – 21st century hand scraped floors comes fully protected by all the modern day technological advances of durable urethane finishes.

Wire Brushed Floors

Wire brushed floors also mimic the appearance of reclaimed wood, but to a lesser degree than hand scraped flooring. They also come fully protected with high-tech, durable urethane finishes.

Hardwood Laminate

In hardwood laminated flooring, several layers of wood are bonded together in opposite directions to give strength and to help prevent expansion and shrinkage. These floors come in a wide range of finishes that imitate all the charm and character of solid wood floors, but are far less costly.

Other Laminate Flooring

Laminates offer all the look and design features of other, more solid types of flooring but are more affordable and easier to maintain.

Laminates are made out of four distinct layers that are bonded together to form a surface that can withstand heavy traffic and keep its beautiful, newly installed finish, for a long time to come.

The uppermost layer is made out of clear aluminum oxide and is there to provide a durable waterproof finish that also protects against surface burns, stains, and fading.

Then comes the design layer which is basically a high-resolution photograph of the type of floor surface you want your laminate to imitate – hardwood, natural stone, tile – the range is almost limitless.

The design layer is bonded under high pressure to the following core layer which is made out of durable high-density fiber board which gives the flooring its depth and provides protection against indentations. Finally, the bottom-most back layer protects against moisture, adds stability, prevents bowing and adds balance to the floor.

Laminates are hugely popular because they can imitate just about every flooring you can imagine, as well as being very durable and easy to maintain. Laminates are ideal in heavy traffic areas, homes with children and pets, offices, stairways, in fact, just about anywhere except kitchens and bathrooms where too much moisture can sometimes cause the layers to separate over time.
